HURRICANE SEASON 2025 IS HERE:

MAKE SURE YOU'RE PREPARED

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially began this past Sunday, June 1st. For boaters in Florida and along the Eastern Seaboard, it’s a crucial reminder that while summer promises endless adventures on the water, preparedness is key to protecting your vessel and ensuring your peace of mind.

The most important step you can take right now is to have a solid hurricane plan in place. Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or a weekend warrior, proactive planning can make all the difference should a storm approach.

Review Your Insurance Coverage Make sure your boat insurance policy is up to date. Understand exactly what is covered in the event of a hurricane and what your responsibilities are as the policyholder. Equally important is notifying your insurance carrier of your current hurricane preparedness plan—this may be required for full coverage eligibility.

Confirm Marina Haul-Out Arrangements If your hurricane plan includes a haul-out at a marina, double-check that you are currently on the list and verify all details with the facility. Many marinas have limited space, and assumptions can be costly if a storm is on the way.

Establish Backup Boat Operators If you won’t be available to move your vessel in the event of an emergency, have alternate operators in place who are familiar with your boat and the evacuation plan. Coordination and communication now can save valuable time later.

Hurricane Season Prep Checklist:

  • Review and update your boat insurance policy

  • Share your hurricane plan with your insurance carrier

  • Confirm your marina haul-out reservation and requirements

  • Identify and brief alternate boat operators

  • Inspect and secure all lines, fenders, and chafe gear

  • Store important documents in a waterproof container off the vessel

  • Remove or secure loose items and electronics on deck

  • Check battery condition and charge status

  • Ensure bilge pumps are functional and automatic switches are working

  • Take updated photographs of your vessel for insurance purposes

  • Maintain a detailed inventory of onboard equipment and gear

  • Review local marina and anchorage hurricane protocols

  • Stock up on necessary supplies: extra lines, fenders, fuel, and first aid kit

There’s no reason not to enjoy everything the summer boating season has to offer—but taking these few extra steps now ensures you’re ready for whatever comes your way. Here’s to safe and memorable adventures on the water, and to being prepared should a storm set its sights on our shores.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and enjoy your summer!
